Rockland County Video Production: MP-AV Helps Tell America’s Story for America 250

When Rockland County needed a professional video production company to help tell an important part of American history, they turned to Moving Pictures Audio & Video Productions, Inc. (MP-AV).

The project was especially meaningful because it was created in connection with America's 250th anniversary — America 250.

Great Video Production Starts Before the Cameras Roll

Professional video production is about much more than showing up with cameras.

Before filming began, the MP-AV team participated in six pre-production calls with historians and project stakeholders.

These conversations allowed our production team to understand the history behind each story, determine how best to approach the interviews and visuals, and plan a production that would be both historically accurate and engaging for viewers.

For corporate, government and nonprofit video projects, we believe this pre-production process is one of the most important parts of creating successful content.

By the time our cameras started rolling, we weren't just walking into a location and recording an interview. We understood the story we were there to tell.

Filming Throughout Rockland County, New York

Once production began, our crew had the opportunity to film at some incredible and historically significant locations throughout Rockland County, NY.

That created an interesting production challenge.

Many of the locations were very old and historically important, so our crew needed to be extremely careful with how we brought in, positioned and moved our cameras, lighting and production equipment.

At the same time, we didn't want those limitations to compromise the look of the production.

Rather than simply recording interviews, our goal was to visually bring these stories to life while respecting the incredible locations where we were filming.

Creating the Right Cinematic Look

As the Director and Director of Photography (DP) on the project, I wanted the interviews to have a very specific look.

I chose a softer, lower-contrast visual style that would help draw the viewer's attention directly to the faces of the historians and people telling these amazing stories.

The locations were beautiful and historically significant, but the people telling the stories needed to remain the focus.

We kept our lighting natural with a mid-key feel, carefully shaping the light rather than overpowering the existing environment. The goal was to create interviews that felt authentic and intimate while still maintaining the polished, cinematic look expected from a professional production.

Shooting with Sony FX6 Cinema Cameras in S-Log3

For this production, we chose our Sony FX6 cinema cameras, shooting in S-Log3/S-Gamut3.Cine.

Shooting in S-Log3 allowed us to preserve dynamic range and capture detail throughout the highlights and shadows while giving our post-production team greater control over the strong colors, skin tones and natural characteristics of these historic environments.

That flexibility was especially important when moving between locations that could have dramatically different lighting conditions.

But cameras and specifications are only tools.

Every creative decision — from camera placement and lens selection to lighting, exposure, composition and color — was made around one objective:

Keep the viewer focused on the person telling the story.

That's a philosophy we bring to every MP-AV production. Having professional equipment matters, but knowing how and why to use that equipment to tell a client's story is what ultimately creates the image.

From Production Through Post-Production

Throughout the project, our team captured interviews, historic locations, supporting footage and visual elements that could all be brought together during post-production.

MP-AV managed the project from pre-production through filming, editing and final delivery, working closely with the Rockland County team throughout the process.

Because our team was involved from the earliest pre-production conversations, we were able to carry the same creative direction through production and into the edit.

The result was a cohesive four-part series rather than four individual videos that simply looked and felt the same.

Ultimately, great-looking video is only part of the job.

The completed four-part series performed extremely well for Rockland County and helped the county share its history with residents and viewers as America celebrates its 250th anniversary.
